When it comes to cheesesteaks, everyone knows the holy land is Philadelphia. But let’s be real, sometimes you don’t want to make the trip down the turnpike (and sit in traffic) just to get your fix. Luckily, South Central PA has some serious contenders that can hold you over until your next Philly pilgrimage (and save you the toll money).

For years, locals would hype up “good” cheesesteaks that… well, weren’t really cheesesteaks. You’d hear lines like, “They make their own bread!” (translation: leftover pizza dough) or “They really give you lots of meat!” (translation: a mountain of ground hamburger/Steak-ums in a hoagie roll). Don’t even get us started on places that thought ketchup belonged anywhere near a cheesesteak.

After years of taste-testing and research (someone had to do it), we’ve narrowed it down to a solid list of five spots that deliver the real deal. Some are classics, some are newcomers, but all are worthy of your cheesesteak cravings.
#5 – Hefty Lefties
The original reason for our visit was simple: we had heard the buzz about the hoagies, and we needed to find out for ourselves if they lived up to the hype. Spoiler alert—they absolutely did. Fresh, flavorful, and easily some of the best hoagies in the area, these sandwiches alone are worth the trip.
But while we were there, curiosity got the better of us, and we decided to give their cheesesteaks a try. And wow are we glad we did. These beauties had all the hallmarks of a true standout: thinly shaved ribeye, a fresh Italian roll from Corropolese Italian Bakery, perfectly grilled onions, and, of course, our personal favorite- Cooper Sharp cheese.

While this spot may be known first and foremost as a hoagie shop, don’t sleep on their cheesesteaks. They’re every bit as top-notch and just might steal the show.
34 W Philadelphia St, York, PA
#4 – Potato Coop
A newcomer to the cheesesteak scene, but don’t underestimate them — Potato Coop serves up one of the most satisfying steaks in the area. Think thinly sliced ribeye, sautéed onions, melty cheese (we’re always choosing Cooper Sharp), and a killer roll (seeded or plain, your call).
And here’s the kicker: their fries are some of the best around. Seriously, don’t skip them.
📍- 2650 Gravel Rd, Harrisburg, PA
#3 – The Jackson House
This Harrisburg staple has been around for over 40 years, and for good reason. Just steps from the Capitol, it’s long been a lunchtime favorite for locals. While all their cheesesteaks are great, the one that stands above the rest is the 9th and Washington. With sharp provolone and all the essentials done right, this sandwich will haunt your cravings in the best way possible.
Pro tip: They’re only open for lunch Monday through Friday. While you’re there, grab one of their burgers or hoagies. They’re top-notch too.

#2 – Mama Pat’s A Little Taste of Philly Grille

Up in Duncannon, this little shop might look unassuming, but trust us it’s a gem. Mama Pat’s nails the cheesesteak, with all the Philly authenticity you crave, and they also serve hoagies that are hard to come by in this area. We tried it recently and were blown away by the quality and flavor.

They’re only open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., so plan accordingly. And if you’re an Eagles fan, maybe grab a few to-go before kickoff. (Go Birds!) Check out our recent visit on instagram.

#1 – Philadelphia Steaks and Hoagies

This place has been our go-to for over 25 years, and it still hits every time. Run by Philly transplants, they bring in bread fresh from the city every day, pile on thin-sliced steak, add Whiz, and top it with perfectly grilled onions.

But what truly sets them apart is their BBQ Bacon Cheesesteak. Imagine your classic cheesesteak with crispy bacon slices and tangy-sweet BBQ sauce — it’s absolute magic. Pair it with crinkle-cut cheese fries and a fountain soda, and you’ve got perfection on a plate.

The Bottom Line
Philly might always be the cheesesteak capital, but South Central PA has its own lineup of heavy hitters. Whether you’re after old-school flavor or a fresh new take, these four spots deliver the kind of sandwiches that prove you don’t have to cross the turnpike for a legit cheesesteak fix.

not sure when you did this but you missed one thats prolly better than 3 of the ones on your list. try amicis pizza millionaire cheesesteak. its excellent. and of course everyone has their favorites but I can’t understand why Jackson House wasn’t 1 or 2. they’re easily better than those 2. Philly steaks was good 10 years ago but since the owner basically retired, it’s just not the same and the one in Duncannon is ok, good for Perry county though.
We will add amicis to the list, we have heard that one a couple of times since this was posted. There may be an update in the future! Thanks for the suggestion friend.
