6 Fall Bucket List Things to Do in Pennsylvania: The 2026 Guide

Let’s be honest, fall in Pennsylvania is undefeated. The leaves, the cider, the crisp mornings, the excuse to eat every apple treat known to man… OOOWEE! But here’s the thing: the clock is ticking. A few of these experiences only run for a handful of weeks, and one of them won’t be back until fall 2027. So if they’ve been sitting on your “someday” list, someday is right now.

We pulled together six of our absolute favorite fall bucket list experiences across PA, from the PA Wilds to York County to the Poconos. Grab your flannel and let’s go.

6️⃣ Fall Fun at Flinchbaugh’s Orchard & Farm Market

A York County farm favorite that checks every fall box in one stop.

Pick-your-own pumpkins, pick-your-own apples, wagon rides, and a 5-acre corn maze. Flinchbaugh’s is the fall day we keep coming back to. This year’s maze is Clydesdale-themed (their 16th maze season!), takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and has interactive puzzle stations to help you find your way out. Or not. No judgment.

Friday and Saturday admission also gets you into the Farm Fun Fields with sunflowers, wildflowers, and a brand-new Fall Bloom Experience, plus wagon rides out to the patch. Fall Festivals run every Saturday in September and October (plus Monday, October 12), and the farm market is where you stock up on cider, baked goods, and fall treats on the way out. Do not skip the bakery. Trust us.

⚠️ Pro Tips:

  • Buy your tickets online ahead of time. It’s open rain or shine.
  • Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome in the corn maze, sunflower fields, and pumpkin patch (but not in the market, the orchards, or on wagon rides).
  • Double-check hours before you go, especially if you’re planning a Sunday.

5️⃣ Jim Thorpe + the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

A vintage train ride through a gorge full of color, then a stroll through one of PA’s most charming towns.

The Autumn Leaf Train on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is fall in Pennsylvania at its most cinematic. The 45-minute narrated ride follows the Lehigh River into Lehigh Gorge State Park past cliffs, bridges, and hillsides that put on a serious show in October. Pick a cozy coach or go open-air for the full leaf-peeping experience.

Autumn Leaf trains run daily from September 26 through November 15, 2026, so you have a real window here. Afterward, wander the historic streets of Jim Thorpe. The shops, the restaurants, the Victorian architecture… it’s called the “Switzerland of America” for a reason.

⚠️ Pro Tips:

  • New this year: advance tickets are available for Autumn Leaf excursions, but you have to pick them up at the Jim Thorpe ticket window before boarding.
  • Trains departing 4 PM or later are same-day, first-come, first-served at the booth (it opens at 7 AM).
  • If the weather’s nice, grab the open-air car and sit on the river side.
  • Parking in Jim Thorpe fills up FAST on foliage weekends. Arrive early and read the parking signs carefully.

4️⃣ American Rail Bike Adventures

Pedal a custom rail bike through a tunnel Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train passed through.

This one is just plain fun. You climb onto a custom-built two- or four-seat rail bike and pedal the old Northern Central Railway line out of Seven Valleys, past farmland, stone houses, and over bridges, until you roll into the Howard Tunnel. Opened in 1838, it’s the second-oldest railroad tunnel in the United States, and yes, Lincoln’s funeral train passed through it in 1865. History AND a workout!

The Howard Tunnel Tour is roughly 7 miles round trip and takes about an hour and a half. The track is completely flat, so it’s doable for just about everyone, and the pedaling is more leisurely than sweaty.

⚠️ Pro Tips:

  • Reservations are a must. Tours sell out, especially on fall weekends.
  • Closed-toe shoes are required.
  • The bikes have baskets, so pack water and snacks.
  • Check their current days of operation before you go (they don’t run every day of the week).

3️⃣ The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon

One of the most iconic fall foliage views in the entire state.

Pine Creek Gorge, just outside Wellsboro, is pure autumn magic. When the whole valley lights up in red and gold, standing at the overlook feels like you’ve been dropped into a painting. Fall is our personal favorite time to visit, and northern PA typically peaks in early to mid-October.

Hit the overlooks at Leonard Harrison State Park, then drive around to Colton Point State Park for a completely different angle on the canyon. If you’re up for it, the Turkey Path Trail takes you down into the gorge past waterfalls (it’s steep and rocky, so wear real shoes). Then save room for Wellsboro. The gas-lit Main Street is made for coffee, shopping, and slow wandering.

⚠️ Pro Tips:

  • Go on a weekday if you can. Peak foliage weekends get busy.
  • Leonard Harrison has the visitor center and the most accessible overlooks. Colton Point is quieter and more rustic.
  • Make it a weekend! Wellsboro is the perfect home base.

2️⃣ National Apple Harvest Festival

A 60-year Adams County tradition with every apple treat imaginable.

Held in the heart of PA apple country just outside Gettysburg, the National Apple Harvest Festival has been going strong since 1965. We’re talking 300+ craft vendors, orchard tours, hayrides, a petting zoo, live music, antique cars, and apple EVERYTHING: cider, dumplings, butter, pancakes, fritters… you get the idea. Come hungie.

The 2026 festival runs the first two full weekends in October: October 3–4 and October 10–11. Hours are Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 8 AM to 5 PM, rain or shine.

⚠️ Pro Tips:

  • Admission includes parking, shuttle or wagon service to the grounds, all entertainment, and the orchard bus tours.
  • Kids 12 and under get in free with an adult.
  • Ticket prices went up for 2026, so grab yours online ahead of time and skip the line.

1️⃣ Walk the Kinzua Sky Walk at Kinzua Bridge State Park

The most jaw-dropping foliage view in Pennsylvania, and your only shot at it until fall 2027.

Looking outward from the end of what seems like a never ending wooden bridge

Topping our list because this one is truly time-sensitive. The Kinzua Sky Walk, built on the remains of what was once the tallest railroad bridge in the world, sends you roughly 600 feet out over the Kinzua Valley, 225 feet above the forest floor, with a glass-floor section at the end for the brave. Look down at the twisted wreckage from the 2003 tornado. Look out at a sea of color. It is unreal.

Here’s the catch: the Sky Walk has been closed for a multi-year rehabilitation project and only reopened for fall foliage season on September 1, 2026. It closes again on November 1, and crews won’t finish the restoration until fall 2027. So if you’ve never walked it, this is your window. As of mid-September the valley was still mostly green, so aim for early to mid-October for peak color.

⚠️ Pro Tips:

  • The parking lot regularly hits capacity on weekends, and construction equipment has made parking even tighter. Go on a weekday or arrive early. Once the lot fills, no more cars are let in, and roadside parking isn’t allowed.
  • The Kinzua Creek Trail reopened September 5 and ends on the Sky Walk side of the valley (no crossing the stream to the far side).
  • The visitor center and PA Wilds Conservation Shop are open year-round.
  • Make a full PA Wilds weekend of it with Bendigo State Park, Elk State Park, or the Allegheny National Forest nearby.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Let Fall Slip Away

From glass-floored sky walks and canyon overlooks to apple festivals, vintage trains, and rail bikes through a piece of history, Pennsylvania packs a LOT into a few short weeks. Most of these wrap up by the end of October or mid-November, so pick a weekend, pick a spot, and go make some memories.
